APPLE VS GOOGLE

I found Daniel Roth's article "Google's Open Source Android OS Will Free the Wireless Web" really interesting. I'd never given much thought to the birth of the smart phone. As far as i was concerned, one day they just appeared and now everybody has one. The early developments and competition between Microsoft and Google really did lead to the smart phones of today. It seems from the reading, that Google had the better ideas in terms of software and getting people to develop applications for a cash prize. Yet Microsoft dominates the market as the most popular smartphone. Apple have somehow convinced the world that their products are the only "cool' option. I have an iPhone and i cant see myself switching anytime soon. The only time i hear about androids are on Saturday Night Live where they joke that "The new android phone is expected to play well in the 'mum's who always buy the wrong thing' market". That being said, there is statistical evidence showing that Android is competing with the iPhone. I believe the seemingly endless flow of glowing reviews about the new iPhone 4S will tip the scales a bit more.

Aside from Apples marketing genius, i believe that Google is the true winner. Its android software is used by nearly everyone smartphone that isn't an iphone and iPhones direct traffic to Google, YouTube and other Google owns sites anyway. However, it seems Google will have to pull something special out of their asses to dominate the smartphone world

  1. Being abit of a smartphone noob, I'm a little disheartened to learn I'm in with the mums who buy the wrong thing, with my little HTC android... (Thanks SNL)

Anyway, I think you're right in that Google is the real winner. Most people don't realise the sheer dominance of Google in the online world, from its android technology, youtube, Google Maps, etc. With the amount of phones using the Android platform, I'd say they're beating Apple.

  2. iwould say that Apple has the best phone, and Google has the best OS... iDon't really know if you can compare the two, for instance ilove the Google philosophy but icant decide what phone is best. And ihave heaps of apple products so an iphone might be good.

  3. This weeks discussion has helped me decide to move on from my iPhone (despite being a loyal customer for the last 3 years). However, if I were to replace my trusty iPhone it would need to be with a phone as user friendly and stylish. Additionally, the amount of problems a close friend of mine had with an HTC will probably mean i will avoid those three letters altogether. However, I may have found exactly what I was looking for: http://apcmag.com/Content.aspx?id=8426

  4. Yeah, its hard to agree with one is better than the other, I think that there are ups and downs to both sides. But it is good to see that the competition between the two is being used in a creative way, that they are pushing each other to be more competitive, better than the other, for the sake of the consumer. I don't own an iphone, but I doo like the idea of owning one, however I am a windows user, have been, and probably always will be. I don't think this is because I dont like Macs, but rather that its the system I have always used, because it is what my parents chose. I can't see myself getting a mac simply because i don't want to learn how to use their system, every time i have used their computers i just get frustrated.
